Love lunch, but bored of bland supermarket sandwiches? secret:sheffield are here to help. Here’s our pick of the city’s best eateries that you may not know about.

Hidden halfway down Chapel Walk in the city centre, Feast is an independent sandwich shop, offering food prepared freshly onsite. They serve the usual array of paninis and salads, but the jewel in Feast’s culinary crown is their fine selection of bagels – brilliant if you’re looking for something a bit different. The Tuna Kick (£2.50) is our favourite – delicious fish with a splash of fiery Tabasco sauce.

DeliShuss
Tucked away behind Orchard Square is the city centre’s best-named sandwich shop – DeliShuss. Their hog roasts – served with all the trimmings – are very popular, but their homemade cold fillings are just as lovely. Try the lemon pepper chicken – tantalisingly tasty.

Staniforth’s (Image: Adam Kay)

Another Chapel Walk staple, Staniforth’s is a family-run bakery chain, founded in nearby Rawmarsh in 1940. Their dinnertime meal deal is the best bargain in the city – freshly prepared sandwich, drink, crisps or homemade sausage roll and a homemade cake or bun, all for under £4. You literally can’t say fairer than that.

Spoilt For Choice (Image: Adam Kay)

Spoilt For Choice
This Ecclesall Road cafe may be small, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in quality. As well as their own range of coffee, they offer a mouth-watering menu of sandwiches. As well as a sausage special and a hot roast – both of which change daily – they serve stews and other meals for diners who want to eat in. Well worth hanging around for.

Sandwiches are a staple of the British dinnertime diet, but eaten day after day they become boring. A Mexican lunch is a brilliant way to introduce a bit of variety – and in Sheffield, nobody does Mexican better than the Street Food Chef. Burritos, nachos, tacos, empanadas – all present and correct, all delicious. Prices start from as little as £2. We recommend the pulled pork burrito with hot habenero sauce. Extra guacamole? Yes please!
